Question: Loans? Grants? Working a lot? Thats their secret
Answer: Most grad students in PhD programs work as TAs or doing research. In terminal masters programs, there are less assistantships available and most of them have at least one job. Even then, everybody I know had to take out loans, and that's just to pay basic bills and buy groceries. You get used to living on next to no money...
Others:
Teaching and research assistants. They do not get paid much, but usually enough to get by. Also, when I was in grad school, I got free tuition if I took a position as a teaching assistant.
