Course Name : The Balkans: Conflict and Peace
Program :
Program Detail : A study of one of the most turbulent areas in the history of the world, this course provides emphasis on the pervasive political and military issues of the Balkan region. "The Balkans: Conflict and Peace" is a review of historical events and military deployments primarily from 1995 (from the signing of the Dayton Accord) to the deployment of NATO's Kosovo Force (KFOR) in 1999 through current day. Background readings will provide the student context; an overview of the historical background over the past 200 years that has led to the events of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The course will then follow contemporary United Nations documents captured in, Peacekeeping in the Former Yugoslavia: From the Dayton Accord to Kosovo. Within this framework there will be a greater emphasis put on the historical background of the recent Balkan conflicts that culminated in the events of 1999. A general understanding of all Balkan states and their intertwined histories will be learned. Finally, the future of the former Yugoslavia will be reviewed.
